Though no career is entirely recession-proof, court reporting is more constant than most others when times are hard. Several elements create the high demand for court reporters. First, there is an increased demand in the legal field. Crime tends to rise dramatically when people feel desperate and experience serious financial problems, so the number of court cases increase. Civil disputes also reach a boiling point, resulting in more civil litigation when times are tough.

Court reporters, sometimes referred to as stenographers, attend legal proceedings and other public events where they create word-for-word transcriptions of the events. In addition to reporting the words spoken during the proceedings, court reporters might include actions and gestures made by participants. Some court reporters work outside the legal system, providing closed-captioning and other transcription services for the benefit of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
